Understanding Depression in Teenagers and Adolescents
Depression in adolescents can manifest differently than in adults. It can include persistent feelings of sadness, irritability, and hopelessness, making it difficult for young people to engage in everyday activities. This condition affects not only their mood but also their physical health, motivation, and academic performance. Without proper treatment, depression can have long-term consequences on a young person’s development and well-being.

Recognising the Symptoms of Depression
The symptoms of depression in young people can vary, but common signs include continuous feelings of sadness or irritability, loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleeping or eating patterns, and physical complaints such as headaches or stomach aches. Some young people may isolate themselves from friends and family, while others may display uncharacteristic anger or frustration. Recognising these symptoms early is key to successful intervention and treatment.

The Impact on Young People and Families
Depression doesn’t just impact the young person suffering from it—it affects the entire family. Parents often feel lost, unsure of how to support their child as they withdraw from social life and become more isolated. Siblings may also feel confused by the changes in their brother or sister’s behaviour. Without proper treatment, depression can create significant tension in relationships at home, at school, and with peers. Early intervention is key to alleviating these challenges.
